Amstetten is a town in Niederosterreich (Lower Austria). It is the capital of the Amstetten District. Amstetten is the most significant city in the region. Amstetten has a population of approximately 23,000 people. Amstetten is situated near the Ybbs River, northeast of Steyr. Recorded in 996 as a possession of the bishops of Passau (now in Germany), it was fortified and granted market rights when it passed to the House of Habsburg in 1276. It achieved town status in 1897. The 14th-century parish church in the town incorporates an earlier Romanesque basilica.
Amstetten has several small industrial companies, but its main economic base is the service sector. The town is also an important regional retail centre. Many of Amstetten’s inhabitants commute to nearby towns for work, however. Amstetten is district capital of the western part of Lower Austria, administrative and economic centre of the alpine upland and the Mostviertel region; excellent location at the intersection of train and highway routes, direct connection to the Western highway A1 and the Danube, gateway to the marvellous valley of the Ybbs and to the Gesause mountain national park.
