Nonetheless, it remains a very green commune. In order to provide uninterrupted walkways, the communal administration has provided each neighborhood with gardens and parks, including Astrid, Crickx, Forestier/het Bos, Scherdemael, Joseph Lemaire, J. Vives, de la Pede/Pede and des Etangs/de Vijvers parks, as well as the garden of the Erasmus House (Maison d'Erasme/Erasmushuis). The presence of this famous humanist's house, who inhabited it in 1521, in the historical centre with the ever-present traces of its medieval past, along with the Beguine convent, a cluster of 16th century houses, is a pleasant reminder of days gone by.
Brussels' westernmost municipality is the only one with a real rural area, Neerpede, the part of Anderlecht west of the ring road. This offers a unique experience within the Brussels Metropolitan Region: biking country lanes. The city animals among use stay within the urban part where they can discover the Brussels’ Geuze Museum about the typical Brussels beer, the canons’ house and the beguinage of Anderlecht where Erasmus stayed several months, the Collegial Church of Saint Peter and Saint Guido, and soccer freaks go for the Vanden Stock Stadium. Today, the name Anderlecht rings a bell in every Belgian ear thanks to its very successful football club.
