Izola (Italian: Isola) is an old maritime town, port and tourist destination in Slovenia situated on a peninsula along the Adriatic coast. Although on the border of the Mediterranean, the town is characterized by the Mediterranean climate: warm, dry summers and mild winters.
The history of Izola is quite rich and the architecture of the old town supports this claim. First settlements in this area were established already in the 1st century on the island that was later on connected with the mainland (hence the name Isola, which means „island”). Throughout the history, Izola was mostly ruled by the Venetians. In the 13th century it declared its independence and became an autonomous town. During that time, it was a strong economic centre; however, its significance was seriously disrupted when Trieste became the major harbor of the region in the 16th century. During the French occupation at the beginning of the 19th century, city walls were demolished and the rocks were used to join the island with the rest of the mainland.
Among the sights, the most prominent are the following: St. Maurus church (16th ct.), city hall from the 16th century, patrician mansion Manzioli (year 1470) and Lovisato (16th ct.) as well as the Baroque palace Besenghi degli Ughi.
