Evere is traditionally divided into Lower Evere and Upper Evere, separated today by avenue Léopold III. Lower Evere, aka Old Evere, is the oldest settlement of the municipality; it’s developed around the St. Vincent church, a mill and a farm, and is still mostly made of small houses. Upper Evere developed more recently around St. Joseph church and the road to Leuven; it has a lot of green areas, including the Brussels cemetary, wide streets and apartment and office buildings, mostly built after the 1950s. Historically speaking, Evere lies along the ancient Roman road, known as the road to Cologne. Until 1950, this commune concentrated mainly on farming. With 50 ha of green areas, including Moeraske, Parc du Doolegt/Park van Doolegt and Parc Saint-Vincent/Sint-Vincentpark, Evere still is a very pleasant place to live.

The old population, which was mainly made up of craftsmen and farmers, has slowly given way to a majority of employees and shopkeepers. Evere encompasses four non-polluting, semi-industrial zones, which provide an increasing number of jobs.
