The ancient core of Metlika lies on an elevated section between the Obrha stream which rises in the middle of the town and the old riverbed of the Bojice stream. The town has a strong and rich wine-growing tradition. Vast vineyards in the region around Drasici are owned by the agricultural co-operative Kmetijska zadruga Metlika, where the quality red wine Metliska crnina is grown.
